September Featured Artist:
Joseph Marino is an accomplished wooden Irish flute and whistle player based in Asheville, North Carolina. While he is widely celebrated today for his driving, soulful interpretations of traditional Celtic music, Marino’s musical foundation is rooted deeply in the American jazz tradition. He spent years as a trained, working jazz upright bassist, an experience that heavily shapes his current work. This dual background infuses his flute playing with a distinct rhythmic swing, sophisticated harmonic awareness, and a brilliant knack for improvisation. Whether leading his local project Common Sound or collaborating with regional virtuosos, Marino bridges the gap between worlds, bringing a rich, improvisational jazz sensibility to the heart of traditional acoustic music.
