Josh Couts Quintet
Sat, Oct 17

Josh Couts is a versatile jazz guitarist and composer whose music draws from a deep foundation in bebop and hard bop alongside the traditions of South American classical guitar. Blending these influences with an evolving approach to improvisation and a distinctive compositional voice, Couts creates music that feels at once familiar and fresh.
His latest album, The General Dance, released in 2025, features original compositions spanning classic and modern jazz, Brazilian music, and beyond. The album showcases a quintet featuring Gary Wheat, Choko Aiken, Nick Walker, and CJ Brown. His previous releases as a leader include All Things Green (2022), featuring bassist Curtis Lundy, pianist Louis Heriveaux, and drummer Terreon Gully, and Time Marching On (2018).
Couts holds a master’s degree from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, complementing his formal training with years of experience on the bandstand alongside jazz greats including Bobby Watson, Curtis Lundy, and Vincent Chancey.
In addition to composing, performing, and recording, Couts is an educator, teaching guitar and jazz combos at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham.
