Bob Songster's NC Roots Quartet | The Life & Legacy of Thelonious Monk
Bob Songster's NC Roots Quartet returns for a special tribute celebrating the life, music, and enduring legacy of Thelonious Monk, the groundbreaking pianist, composer, and North Carolina native whose unmistakable sound and revolutionary approach to improvisation helped reshape the course of modern jazz.
Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1917, Monk became one of the most original and influential voices in jazz history. A pioneering figure in the development of bebop, his unconventional harmonies, angular melodies, unexpected rhythms, and distinctive piano style challenged musical traditions and expanded the possibilities of jazz composition. Timeless works such as 'Round Midnight, Blue Monk, and Straight, No Chaser remain cornerstones of the jazz repertoire, inspiring generations of musicians around the world.
Through inspired interpretations of Monk's celebrated compositions and explorations of his singular musical language, the NC Roots Quartet honors one of North Carolina's most extraordinary musical innovators. Join us for an evening celebrating creativity, improvisation, and the enduring genius of Thelonious Monk.
